Most of Westminster went up in the 1960s and 70s, and those homes still carry their original bathrooms — cast iron and porcelain tubs, ceramic tile showers, the works. This Westminster project started the way a lot of them do, with a coating that someone else had put on years earlier that was already coming apart. The homeowner had a ceramic shower that had been painted at some point in the past, and by the time they called us, that old finish was peeling and ready to come off. Painting over ceramic might look fine for a little while, but it isn’t built to stand up to daily water and steam, and it almost always lets go eventually. That’s exactly where this one was.

We started by sanding down the old peeling finish. There’s no shortcut here. If you leave a failing layer on the surface and spray over it, the new coating only bonds to something that’s already letting go, and you end up right back where you started in a year or two. So we took it down to a clean, sound surface first.
From there we moved into a deep cleaning of the whole shower to clear out any dust, soap buildup, or residue left behind. A surface has to be truly clean for the new coating to grab the way it should.
Next we turned to the grout. We applied new grout across the walls to make sure everything was properly sealed, with no holes or missing spots for water to sneak through. This step is easy to overlook, but open or failing grout is one of the most common ways moisture gets behind a shower surface and causes problems down the road. We wanted this one sealed up tight.
The ceramic itself had picked up a few chips and scratches over the years, so we repaired those as well. Filling and smoothing those imperfections before coating is what gives you an even, seamless finish at the end, instead of every old flaw showing through the fresh white.
Then we ran new caulk all the way around the shower. Fresh caulk along the seams and edges keeps water where it belongs and gives the whole job a clean, finished look.
With the prep done, we masked off the surrounding area to protect it from overspray. An industrial coating goes on as a fine spray, and it doesn’t stay where you want it on its own, so covering everything around the work area is part of doing the job right.
Finally, we applied our bright white coating. Sprayed on in even layers, it took this tired, peeling ceramic shower and gave it a smooth, fresh, like-new surface.
