For a tub that’s structurally sound, that’s not a close call. The exception is real, though: if a tub is cracked through, has a soft or failing floor, or is rusted past the point a coating can save it, replacement is the right answer and we’ll tell you so.
Most of Ontario’s older neighborhoods — and there are a lot of them, going back to the early 1900s downtown — still have heavy original porcelain and cast iron tubs. Add the newer developments north of the 10 with fiberglass and acrylic units, plus a large rental market across the city, and we see the full range. The home we worked on recently had a heavy porcelain tub in good shape with no cracks — just the usual surface wear. The finish had gone dull and flat, there was staining set into the porcelain that scrubbing wouldn’t touch, and a chip or two on the surface. The tub itself was fine; the surface had simply worn out. And once staining works its way into porcelain, cleaners stop helping, because the problem is no longer sitting on top of the surface — it’s in it.
So we refinished it. The chips got filled and leveled flush, because spraying over a low spot just leaves it showing through. The set-in staining got worked to lift whatever would come up, which also preps the surface to bond. Then the sanding — required on porcelain, since the glaze is slick and the coating needs a scuffed base to hold to. With the tub clean, repaired, and dulled down, we caulked fresh, masked the room, ran ventilation, and sprayed bright white in even coats.
A stained, chipped, dull tub came back clean and bright, and the bathroom read fresh again. Same solid tub, brand-new surface, none of the cost or chaos of a tear-out.
After a short cure — we’ll give you the exact window so the finish hardens properly, usually about seven hours — the tub is back in use.
