San Diego has a deep stock of older housing — craftsman and Spanish revival homes, mid-century neighborhoods, and post-war tracts — and a great many of those bathrooms still have their original cast iron tubs set into ceramic tile. Those are among the best fixtures in any house. Cast iron holds heat, doesn’t flex, and the body lasts generations; what wears out is the porcelain enamel on the surface and the grout and caulk around it. Here’s a reglazing job we just completed in San Diego — an old cast iron tub with two walls of ceramic tile around it.
The main issue wasn’t damage. It was the look. The tub and tile together read dated, and the homeowner had simply stopped liking the design of the bathroom. On top of that there was the ordinary wear you’d expect on a tub of that age: a few chips here and there, and a surface that had lost its shine.
This is one of the situations where refinishing does the most for the least. Nothing was wrong with the tub as a fixture — a cast iron tub in that condition will outlast most of what’s around it, and replacing it means demolition, a plumber, hauling out several hundred pounds of iron, and rebuilding the tile that comes off with it. But the whole room was being held back by two surfaces. Change those surfaces and the room changes, without a single thing behind them being disturbed.
We started with a deep cleaning across the tub and both tile walls, working the grout lines out along with the smooth surfaces. Grout lines collect years of soap residue and grime down where ordinary cleaning never reaches, and a coating grips the surface itself rather than anything sitting on top of it. That step sets up everything after it.
Then we filled the chips in the tub, bringing each one flush with the surrounding surface so it wouldn’t telegraph through the finish. We also filled the grout where it was missing along the tile lines. That’s not a cosmetic step — grout is part of the structure, and an open line is a path for water to get behind the tile, which no coating can fix afterward. Building the grout back solid first is what makes the finish over it worth having.
With the repairs done we ran new caulk, then masked the whole room to prevent any overspray from landing where it shouldn’t.
Then we sprayed the tub and both tile walls in bright white. Coating them together is the part that matters most on a job like this: the tub and the surround cure as one continuous surface, so the finished result reads as a single bright, seamless piece rather than a new tub sitting inside old tile. The bathroom came out sparkling, shiny, and completely current — from a dated room to a clean, modern one in a day.
