The homeowner was in the middle of a small bathroom update — he was getting ready to install a new shower door over the tub, and he wanted the tub itself refreshed to a bright white finish before the new door went up. Smart sequencing on his part. Pairing those two updates together means the new door gets installed onto a freshly finished tub, and the whole setup ends up looking like a complete, coordinated remodel instead of just one piece being newer than the other.
Cast iron tubs are something we always enjoy working on. They’re a different animal from fiberglass or acrylic — heavier, more solid, with a porcelain coating bonded to the iron underneath. The body of the tub itself is essentially indestructible, and as long as the porcelain on top is brought back when it starts to wear, you’ve got a tub that’s going to outlast pretty much everything else in the bathroom. So when a customer with a cast iron tub calls about a refresh, our first thought is always good — these are worth saving every time.
The good news on this particular tub was that it was already in solid shape. No chips, no damage, no rust spots, no real wear of any kind. Just the standard signs of age and a finish that didn’t quite match the fresh look the homeowner was going for. That meant we could spend the whole job focused on the finishing work and the detail areas, instead of needing to take time on structural repairs first.
The first thing we did was clean up the spots where the old shower frame had been anchored. Wherever a shower frame mounts to a tub, there’s usually a combination of fasteners, silicone bead, and caulk holding it in place, and when that frame comes off, leftover residue gets left behind on the tub surface. Silicone in particular is one of those materials that requires real attention — even after you scrape off all the visible residue, it leaves a thin film on the surface, and that film will prevent the new coating from bonding properly wherever it touches. So we took the time to work the perimeter of the tub thoroughly, removing every trace of the old silicone and the leftover caulking until the surface was completely clean and ready to take coating.
That careful prep around the perimeter is one of those steps that really shapes how the final finish looks. The areas right where the old hardware used to sit are the most likely spots for issues to show up later if the prep isn’t done right. So we spent the time on this part and made sure those areas were just as clean and ready as the rest of the tub.
After the silicone cleanup, we did a thorough deep cleaning of the entire tub surface. Even on a tub in good condition, there’s always a thin layer of soap residue, body oils, and water minerals built up across the surface over years of use. Getting all of that off is what gives the new coating its best chance to bond cleanly and last. We worked the tub down to a neutral, ready surface and moved on.
Then we ran fresh caulking all the way around the tub where it meets the wall. New caulk before the spray means the caulk gets coated along with the rest of the tub, so the final transition between the tub and the wall comes out looking smooth and continuous. Looks better and seals better.
Because the tub was in such good shape, there were no chip repairs or rust spots to deal with. That part of the job was simply not needed on this one. So once the cleaning, the silicone removal, and the new caulking were done, we were ready to move into the finishing steps.
We masked the entire bathroom. Plastic and paper over the floor, the vanity, the toilet, the mirror, the fixtures, anything that wasn’t getting sprayed. Masking takes some real time to do well, but it’s what keeps the rest of the bathroom clean and untouched while we work, and that matters extra on a job like this where the customer is about to install brand-new hardware. The last thing he needed was overspray to deal with on the surfaces where his new shower door was going to mount.
After the masking was set, we ran our ventilation system to pull fumes out of the house during the spray. Standard practice on every job. Keeps the air in the home clear and makes the workspace comfortable.
For the coating, we sprayed our polyurethane finish across the whole tub in bright white. Polyurethane is what gives the tub its durability, gloss, and ability to stand up to daily use and standard cleaners. Cast iron is a great surface to spray when it’s been prepped right — solid, stable, no flex, no surprises. We laid down our coats nice and even, building up the depth and the shine the way we like to see it, and let the whole thing cure properly before touching anything.
When the masking came down, the tub looked completely renewed. Bright, glossy, smooth from end to end, with clean caulk lines and a perimeter that was ready to take the new shower door whenever the customer was set to install it. The whole tub had gone from a slightly dated piece to looking like brand-new factory finish.
The customer was thrilled with the result. With the tub now finished, he was set up perfectly to bring in his new shower door and have the whole project come together as one coordinated update.
