Reglazing instead of replacing saves thousands of dollars and days of demolition mess.
El Segundo’s housing is largely older and post-war, and a lot of those bathrooms have one-piece fiberglass tub and shower units installed decades ago. They tend to outlast their own finish by a wide margin — the unit is still sound long after the surface has gone dull and discolored, which is exactly the situation refinishing is built for.
We handle:
Just completed the reglazing of a fiberglass tub and shower combination in El Segundo, finished up before the weekend. The homeowner’s issue was discoloration — the unit was around thirty years old and had simply lost its color over time. There wasn’t much damage to speak of, which made it a straightforward unit to work with.
Thirty years is worth pausing on, because it’s a good illustration of how these units age. Nothing was cracked, nothing was leaking, no soft spots in the floor. Structurally it had plenty of life left. What had worn out was the thin glossy layer on top, and once that goes, the material underneath holds discoloration in a way that cleaning can’t reverse. The fixture and its finish don’t wear out on the same schedule — and it’s only the finish that needs replacing.
We started with a deep cleaning of the whole unit, then a light sanding across the surface. On fiberglass that sanding does two jobs: it knocks the gloss off so the new coating has something to grip, and it takes down the worn top layer so the finish goes on over a sound base.
Then we dried the unit with air. A coating won’t bond to a damp surface, and moisture trapped in seams or corners will show up later as a defect, so it gets dried out properly rather than left to sit.
Next we ran fresh caulk all the way around the top, then masked the whole room to prevent any overspray from landing where it shouldn’t.
Finally we sprayed the whole unit with a bright white finish. A thirty-year-old combo that had gone dull and discolored came out shiny, smooth, and bright — the kind of change that makes the whole bathroom look renewed even though only the surface moved.
Every job finishes the same way: we hand over a post-care kit and our cleaning recommendations, so you know exactly how to keep the finish looking sharp.
This job was in El Segundo, and we cover the neighboring cities just as easily — Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, and Hawthorne.
If your tub or combo is decades old but still sound, discoloration isn’t a reason to replace it. Call (310) 401-4491 for an honest estimate and we’ll tell you straight whether reglazing is the right move.
