Just finished reglazing a porcelain tub in Azusa. The tub was in great condition — the only real issue was the silicone left behind on the surface after the homeowner removed his old shower frame.
He was planning to put a new frame in, and this is where the order of operations matters. Our advice was to take the old frame off, reglaze the tub, and install the new frame afterward — which is exactly what he did. Doing it that way, the new frame mounts against a fresh, sealed surface, and we get a clean, unobstructed tub to work on. Reversed, you end up spraying around brand-new hardware, masking every edge of it, and leaving a coating that can’t lay down cleanly right where the eye goes. Worse, the new frame would be bedded onto the old worn surface, so you’d be sealing the tired finish in place under hardware you just paid for.
The silicone itself was the actual work on this job. When a frame comes off, it leaves a bead of old silicone stuck to the tub, and silicone is the one contaminant that can’t be worked around — nothing bonds over it, and a coating sprayed on top of any residue will lift right there. So we scraped the remaining silicone down and off the surface, then went into a deep cleaning of the whole bathtub to clear the soap film and buildup along with any traces left behind.
With the surface clean, we ran fresh caulk all the way around the top of the tub, then masked the whole room with paper and plastic film to prevent any overspray from landing anywhere it shouldn’t.
Finally we sprayed the whole tub with the bright white finish, built up in even coats. It completely changed the look of the tub — smooth and glossy, no trace of the silicone line, and ready for the new frame to go on against a fresh surface.
