We just completed a porcelain tub reglazing job in Riverside on a tub that had been painted a couple of years back, and the previous finish was peeling. The cause turned out to be a bath mat with suction cups — a common one, and something we walked the customer through so it wouldn’t happen again on the new finish.
But the part of this job worth talking about is how we handled the old coating, because that’s not the same on every tub.
When a previous finish is failing, there’s a real judgment call about how much of it to remove.
Sometimes the old coating is so poorly bonded that the whole thing has to come off — scraped and sanded down to bare porcelain — because anything left behind is a weak point waiting to lift. Other times the old finish is actually gripping well across most of the tub, and only certain areas have let go. In that case, stripping the entire tub is overkill: hours of extra labor and cost that doesn’t make the final result any better.
So you test it. You work the surface, check how the existing coating responds, find where it’s sound and where it isn’t, and take off what needs to come off without tearing up what’s still solid.
On this tub, the old coating was holding fine across most of the surface — only the areas around the suction-cup damage were peeling. So we did a partial sanding: took down just the failing areas, feathered the edges so they’d blend invisibly, and left the well-bonded coating in place as a sound base.
That distinction matters when you’re getting quotes. A company that strips every tub down to bare porcelain regardless of condition is charging you for work your tub may not need. A company that never strips anything is setting your new finish up to fail. Reading each tub is the job.
Before the sanding, we removed the silicone from around the tub and along the shower rail — old silicone has to come off completely, since nothing bonds over it. After the partial sanding we moved into a deep cleaning, scrubbing the whole surface so there was nothing left to interfere with the new coating’s bond. There were a couple of chips on the side and along the edge, so we filled those and brought them flush to disappear under the finish.
With prep complete, we masked the whole room — walls, floor, fixtures, everything outside the tub — and set up ventilation to pull fumes out of the house during the spray. Then we sprayed our bright white finish across the tub. After it set, we pulled the masking and walked the customer through the result. The peeling was gone, the chips were gone, and the tub came out smooth, glossy, and bright white like new.
Every job finishes the same way: we hand over a post-care kit and our cleaning recommendations — including which mats and cleaners to use, and which ones will shorten the life of any finish. A good reglaze isn’t just about the day we finish; it’s about how it holds up years down the road.
