A recent job: fiberglass shower refreshed in Apple Valley, CA

Got a fiberglass shower in Apple Valley we want to tell you about, because it’s a great example of how a fairly small job can make a big difference. The customer wasn’t dealing with anything catastrophic here. No cracks, no broken pan, nothing falling apart. He just wanted to give a tired shower a little refreshment, and there were really two things dragging the look of it down.

Number one was the caulking. The old caulk running along the shower frame had gone moldy — that dark, spotty look that creeps into the seams and won’t scrub out no matter what you throw at it. Number two was the surface itself, which had simply discolored over time and lost the clean, bright look it had when it was new. Put those two things together and you’ve got a shower that works fine but looks worn out. That’s exactly the kind of thing refinishing is built for.

Here’s how we worked through it.

First job was getting that moldy caulk out, and we pulled it from both sides — inside the shower and outside along the frame. You can’t just lay new finish over old caulk, and you definitely can’t leave moldy caulk sitting in the seams, so all of it had to come out before anything else happened.

Once the caulk was gone, we went back over the whole shower frame with a brush to make sure there was no silicone hiding in the seams. This step matters more than it sounds like it should. Silicone is the one thing that’ll wreck a refinish — it bleeds right through a new coating and shows itself no matter how many coats go on top — so we don’t take it on faith that the surface is clean. We physically work the frame to confirm there’s nothing left behind before we move on.

With the frame confirmed clean, we moved into a deep cleaning of the surface, then dried it down completely. A coating won’t bond to a damp or dirty surface, so this is one of those steps you simply don’t rush.

Then, before any finish went on, we ran fresh caulk all the way around the shower frame. Doing it now means the seams are properly sealed and water won’t be able to work its way back behind the frame again — which is what caused the moldy mess in the first place. Seal it right and you’re not fighting that same problem a year down the road.

Next came the masking. We covered the entire bathroom to keep overspray from drifting onto anything it shouldn’t touch, and we covered the shower door itself too, since it was staying put. Overspray doesn’t stay where you spray it, so sealing the room off is non-negotiable.

After that, we laid down an adhesive primer. That primer is the layer that actually bonds the new coating to the fiberglass — it’s what makes the finish hold instead of peeling somewhere down the line. And then, finally, the part everyone pictures when they think of this work: we sprayed the bright white finish over the top, building it up in even coats.

The result was wonderful. The discoloration was gone, the moldy seams were a memory, and the whole enclosure looked bright, clean, and refreshed. The customer was really happy with the new look — which, on a refresh job like this, is the whole point.

And that’s the thing worth remembering about shower refinishing. You don’t always need a full gut job. Sometimes a shower is structurally fine and just needs its look brought back — fresh caulk, a clean surface, a new finish — and you’ve essentially got a new shower for a fraction of the cost of tearing one out. We handle the whole thing in a single day, and it’s backed by our warranty, so it holds up.

Every job finishes the same way: we hand over a post-care kit and our cleaning recommendations, so you know exactly how to keep the finish looking sharp.

This job was in Apple Valley, and we cover the surrounding High Desert communities just as easily — Victorville, Hesperia, Adelanto, Lucerne Valley, and Oak Hills.

Ilia is amazing at what he does and I whole heartedly recommend him. We have an old cast iron tub that has been reglazed once before, but it suddenly started peeling. I called Ilia, who answered right away, and said that he could come out on a holiday weekend to do the job. He was always prompt and courteous in his communications and his work was top notch!
