Reglazing instead of replacing saves thousands of dollars and days of demolition mess.
Pasadena has some of the best older housing in the region — craftsman and Spanish revival homes with original cast iron and porcelain tubs — alongside mid-century and later neighborhoods with fiberglass and acrylic units. We work for homeowners and alongside contractors on remodels, where the tub or surround is staying and needs its surface brought back to match the new work around it.
We handle:
We just completed the reglazing of a fiberglass tub and shower combination in Pasadena. The unit was in decent condition — what needed dealing with was the glue and silicone left on the surface after a contractor removed the old shower frame.
Glue is worth mentioning separately from silicone, because they behave differently. Older frames are often bedded in adhesive as well as sealant, and where silicone tends to peel away in a bead, adhesive can leave a hard, uneven film bonded to the surface. Both have to come off completely, and for the same reason: a coating will not bond over either one. Spray over a patch of adhesive residue and you’ll see it — the finish will either lift there or telegraph the ridge underneath it.
So we started with scraping the remaining silicone and glue down off the surface. That’s the slow, unglamorous part of a job like this, and it’s where the outcome is decided.
After that came a deep cleaning of the whole unit to clear the soap film and buildup, followed by a light sanding across the entire surface. The sanding takes the gloss off slick fiberglass and gives the new coating something to grip — and it also levels out any last traces of residue the scraping left behind.
Then we ran fresh caulk all the way around the unit, masked the walls, floor, and ceiling to prevent any overspray, and in the final stage sprayed the bright white finish in even coats.
The unit came out smooth, bright, and uniform, with no sign of where the old frame had been mounted. The customer was extremely pleased with the result.
Every job finishes the same way: we hand over a post-care kit and our cleaning recommendations, so you know exactly how to keep the finish looking sharp.
This job was in Pasadena, and we cover the neighboring cities just as easily — Altadena, South Pasadena, Arcadia, San Marino, and Rosemead.
