Laguna Niguel’s neighborhoods went up largely from the 1970s through the 90s, and many of those bathrooms feature custom-sized ceramic tile showers and tubs that don’t have off-the-shelf replacements — meaning a tear-out here usually turns into a full custom remodel. That makes reglazing especially worthwhile: we repair the tile, regrout, and refinish the whole thing in one or two days, and the shower reads brand new. Spent two really good days on a shower project in Laguna Niguel recently. This was a bigger one than some of the jobs we post about — a custom-sized ceramic tile shower with a full scope of work including a door replacement, a color change, tile repair, regrouting, and a full reglaze. The homeowner wanted to bring the whole shower back to looking brand new, and she gave us the time and the space to do it right.
These bigger combination projects are some of our favorites because you can really see the difference when you’re done. A reglaze on its own is a beautiful update, but when you pair it with fresh grout, new caulk, repaired tile, and a brand-new door, the customer ends up with what looks and feels like a completely renovated shower — without the cost or disruption of an actual tear-out remodel.
Here’s how the two days came together.
The first thing we did was remove the existing shower door. Like most installations of this age, the door was anchored to the tile with a combination of fasteners, silicone, and old caulk. We worked carefully to get it out without damaging the surrounding tile, and once it was off, we got to work cleaning up the leftover glue and silicone from where the frame had been mounted. This part of the prep is really important. Silicone residue is one of those things that doesn’t seem like much when you look at it, but if you leave it on the surface, the new coating won’t bond properly anywhere it touches. So we took our time and worked the perimeter of the shower until the surface was completely clean and ready for the next steps.
After the silicone cleanup, we went into a deep cleaning of the entire tile. We worked each grout line individually with a brush. Grout lines are where everything collects over the years — soap, water minerals, body oils, all of it settles into those joints and just stays there. Spraying cleaner on tile and wiping it down doesn’t really get into the grout. You have to physically scrub each line, by hand, to lift that buildup out. It’s slow work, but it’s exactly what makes the difference on a job like this. By the time we were done, the whole shower was back to a clean, neutral surface.
Then we ran fresh caulking all the way around the shower where it meets the drywall. The original caulk had aged out, which is normal for any shower of this age, and getting it replaced is part of giving the whole space a fresh start.
The bigger task on Day One, though, was the full regrout. As we got into the cleaning, it became clear that there were a lot of spots throughout the tile where grout was missing or had broken away over time. Rather than just fill in the worst spots, we made the call to do a full regrout so the whole shower would have a consistent, clean grout finish underneath the new coating. Patched grout in some spots and original grout in others would have shown up later as uneven texture under the bright white finish, and the customer wanted a uniform look across the whole shower. Full regrout was the right call. We worked our way through the entire tile field, filled every line clean, and let everything dry overnight before moving on. Grout needs real time to cure properly, and rushing this step is one of the easiest ways to undermine an otherwise great job. So we wrapped up Day One and let the shower rest.
Came back the next morning with the grout fully set and ready to work on top of. The first task was repairing a couple of cracks we’d found in the tile during the initial walkthrough. The right way to repair a cracked tile in a project like this isn’t to just smear filler on top of it. We drilled out the cracked area first to open it up to clean, solid tile, and then we filled the cavity with fiberglass body filler. Fiberglass bonds hard, cures solid, and once it’s in there it’s not going anywhere. After it cured, we smoothed everything flush with the surrounding tile so the repair would be invisible under the new coating.
With the tile fully repaired and the grout cured, we masked the entire bathroom. Plastic and paper over the floor, the vanity, the toilet, the mirror, the fixtures, anything that wasn’t getting sprayed. On a job with this much surface area, masking takes some real time to do well, but it’s what makes sure the customer’s bathroom looks clean and untouched everywhere outside the shower itself. So we worked through it carefully.
Then we set up our ventilation system to pull fumes out of the house during the spray. We do this on every job. It keeps the air in the home clear and makes the workspace comfortable.
For the spray, we laid down our coating across the whole shower in bright white. Multiple coats, built up evenly, working slowly across all the tile so the coating would cover smoothly without runs or thin spots. We took our time with the coats and let everything cure properly before pulling the masking down.
When we walked the homeowner through it at the end of Day Two, the shower was unrecognizable from what we’d started with. Fresh grout running clean through every line, a smooth tile field with no visible crack repairs, a beautifully even bright white finish across the whole space, and a clean opening ready for her new shower door to be installed. The whole shower felt like a brand-new build.
The customer was thrilled with how it came together, and the two-day pace meant we had time to do every step at the right speed without cutting corners on cure times or prep.
