Just completed the reglazing of a fiberglass shower stall in Manhattan Beach. The main issue was several holes in the bottom of the unit — the kind that can let water through and cause damage under the floor if they’re left alone.
That changed the order we normally work in. Usually the deep cleaning comes first, but cleaning means water on the surface, and putting water on a floor with open holes in it is exactly what we were trying to prevent. So we filled the holes with fiberglass putty first, sealing them off before anything wet went near them. It’s a small decision, but on a unit with an open path through the floor it’s the difference between a repair and a bigger problem.
With the holes sealed, we removed the old caulk from around the unit, then went into the deep cleaning — soap film, body oils, and buildup all have to come off completely, because a coating bonds to the surface itself and not to what’s sitting on it.
After that we applied fresh caulk all the way along the shower frame, inside and outside. Both sides matter: the inside bead keeps water in the shower where it belongs, and the outside bead keeps it from working into the wall behind the frame.
Then we masked the floor, ceiling, and walls to contain the overspray, and sprayed the bright white finish in even coats. The stall came out smooth and bright, with the holes gone, the floor sealed, and fresh seals along the frame.
