Reglazing instead of replacing saves thousands of dollars and days of demolition mess.
Covina’s neighborhoods run from older homes near the downtown area to post-war and later tracts across the city, so we see both original porcelain and cast iron tubs and newer acrylic and fiberglass units. We also get called out regularly for tubs that have been reglazed or painted before and are starting to show it.
We handle:
Here’s a project we just completed in Covina — an acrylic tub and shower combination that had been reglazed at some point before. The old finish was coming off in a couple of spots, which is what prompted the call.
The first decision on a job like this is how much of the existing coating has to go, and it isn’t automatic. Sometimes an old finish is poorly bonded across the board and the whole thing has to come off. Other times, like this one, the coating is actually holding tight nearly everywhere and only a couple of isolated spots have let go. So we work the surface and see how it responds — whether the edges around the failing spots lift when worked or hold firm, and whether the failure looks isolated or is creeping outward. Here it was clearly isolated, so there was no reason to strip a sound coating off the whole unit.
That meant a light sanding across the entire surface instead: enough to knock the gloss down so the new coating has something to grip, and to smooth out the spots where the old finish had come away so they wouldn’t telegraph through. Then a deep cleaning of the whole enclosure, because a coating bonds to the surface itself and not to the soap film and buildup sitting on it.
There were also a couple of small chips next to the drain, which is the most common place to find them — it’s the low point of the tub where water sits and where dropped things tend to land. We filled those with fiberglass putty and brought them flush with the surrounding surface.
After that we ran caulk all the way around to seal the unit, then masked the whole room to prevent any overspray and set up our ventilation to keep the fumes out of the house during the process.
Then we sprayed the polyurethane finish. That’s the layer that gives the surface its gloss and its durability against daily use, hot water, and regular cleaning. It completely changed the look of the tub — from a patchy, tired surface to a bright white, sparkling finish. The customer was thrilled with the result.
Every job finishes the same way: we hand over a post-care kit and our cleaning recommendations, so you know exactly how to keep the finish looking sharp.
This job was in Covina, and we cover the neighboring cities just as easily — West Covina, Glendora, Azusa, San Dimas, and Baldwin Park.
