Before this homeowner in Banning called us, he had already made up his mind to replace his fiberglass tub. He’d had a contractor out, gotten a bid, and the number came back at eight thousand dollars to tear out the old tub and put in a new one. That’s a serious amount of money, and a serious amount of disruption, for a tub that, as it turned out, didn’t need to go anywhere.
When we looked at it, the tub was in good shape. No major damage, no real issues, nothing a refinish couldn’t handle with ease. It’s one of the more satisfying things to tell a customer: the expensive route isn’t the one you need. He could keep the tub he already had, skip the demolition entirely, and end up with a surface that looked brand new for a fraction of that eight-thousand-dollar quote.
Because the tub was in good shape, the work itself was straightforward. We started with a deep cleaning of the whole surface, clearing out soap film, oils, and buildup so the new coating would have a clean base to bond to. Then we made sure the tub was completely dry, since any moisture left behind works against both the coating and the finish.
Next we ran fresh caulk all the way around the top edge of the tub. New caulk seals the seam against water and gives the finished job a clean, tidy line, and it’s a quick win that makes the whole tub look cared for.
Then came the masking, which is where this particular job took some time. The bathroom was on the large side, and since a spray coating travels as a fine mist that settles on anything it can reach, every surface we weren’t refinishing had to be covered. We spent a good while wrapping the room top to bottom, because there’s no such thing as “close enough” with overspray. Skipping or rushing that step is how a fine coat of white ends up where it doesn’t belong, so we covered the walls, fixtures, and floor completely first. With the room sealed off, we set up our ventilation to keep the air moving and the workspace clear.
Finally, we sprayed our bright white coating. Over a clean, dry, well-prepped tub, it laid down smooth and even, and the old tub came out looking like a brand-new fixture.
The customer was thrilled, and the reason wasn’t only how the tub looked. It was the comparison sitting in the back of his mind. He’d been staring down an eight-thousand-dollar replacement, and instead he kept his tub, avoided the mess and the days of downtime that come with a tear-out, and saved thousands in the process. When the finished tub looks this good and the bill is a fraction of what you were quoted, it’s an easy thing to feel good about.
This is the heart of what fiberglass tub refinishing offers. Replacement makes sense in some cases, but far more often a tub in good condition just needs the surface restored rather than the whole fixture ripped out. Fiberglass in particular tends to take a fresh coating beautifully when it’s clean and properly prepped, which is part of why a tub that looks past its prime can come back so convincingly. A thorough clean, fresh caulk, careful masking, and a quality coating can turn a tired tub into one that looks new, and do it for a small share of what replacement would cost. That gap between an eight-thousand-dollar bid and a refinish is exactly the kind of difference that makes this work worth doing. We handle tub reglazing and refinishing like this throughout Banning and across the Riverside and San Bernardino county areas.
