If you’ve ever taken an old framed shower door off a fiberglass enclosure, you might already know how this story starts. Those metal frames are bedded in silicone and screwed straight into the fiberglass, and when they finally come out after years in place, they often take a piece of the surface with them. Chips, gouges, screw holes, torn spots along the edges. The enclosure itself is still perfectly usable, but it looks rough enough that plenty of homeowners assume the whole thing has to be replaced.

That was the situation on this project in Desert Hot Springs. The shower frame had been removed, and the fiberglass underneath was left chipped and damaged in the areas where the frame used to sit. The customer didn’t want a full tear-out, and they didn’t need one. Refinishing was the right call, and the path to a clean result started with undoing the mess the old frame left behind.

The first job was getting rid of every trace of leftover silicone. Old silicone clings to fiberglass and hides in seams and corners, and it’s one of the worst things you can leave on a surface before coating, because nothing bonds to it. A new finish sprayed over old silicone will fish-eye and peel in those spots almost right away. So we worked the surface over carefully and removed all the remaining silicone before moving on.

With the silicone gone, we moved into a deep cleaning of the entire enclosure to clear away soap residue, grime, and any dust left behind from the frame removal. Then we made sure the surface was completely dry. Fiberglass repair and coating both need a clean, dry base to behave the way they should, and rushing past that step is how trouble shows up later.

Now for the real repair work. We filled all the chips, holes, and damaged areas with our fiberglass filler, building the surface back up wherever the frame had torn it away. Once the filler had cured, we sanded everything down until the repaired spots sat flush and smooth with the surrounding fiberglass. This is the part that takes patience. Done right, you shouldn’t be able to feel or see where the damage used to be once the job is finished. A repair left even slightly raised or uneven will show right through the fresh coating, so we kept sanding until the whole surface read as one continuous, smooth plane.

With the enclosure repaired and smoothed, we masked off the entire room to keep overspray off every surface around the work area. A spray coating drifts as a fine mist, and wrapping the bathroom before any spraying begins is the only reliable way to protect everything you’re not coating.

Then we applied our bright white coating. Sprayed in even passes over a surface that was now clean, repaired, and smooth, it pulled the whole enclosure together into a single fresh finish. The chips and frame damage that had made the shower look like a replacement job simply vanished under a uniform coat of white.

The end result was a fiberglass shower enclosure that looked new again, without the cost, mess, and downtime of ripping it out and starting over. That’s the quiet advantage of refinishing damage like this. Frame-removal scars look alarming at first, but they’re very fixable, and a sound enclosure almost always has plenty of life left in it once the surface is restored.

We handle fiberglass enclosure refinishing like this throughout Desert Hot Springs and the surrounding Riverside and San Bernardino county areas, turning rough, damaged surfaces back into clean, bright, like-new showers.

Ilia is amazing at what he does and I whole heartedly recommend him. We have an old cast iron tub that has been reglazed once before, but it suddenly started peeling. I called Ilia, who answered right away, and said that he could come out on a holiday weekend to do the job. He was always prompt and courteous in his communications and his work was top notch!
