We just finished a fiberglass shower reglazing job on a tub and shower combo in La Quinta, and this one was a little different from the usual call. Most of the time a unit comes to us beat up — peeling, chipped, stained, the works. This one was actually in pretty good condition. The only real issue was a couple of spots where a previous owner had done some touch-ups, and that’s its own kind of problem.
Here’s the thing about DIY touch-ups on fiberglass. Even when someone’s trying to do the right thing, those patched spots almost never blend in. The sheen is off, the color’s a little different, and you end up with a unit that looks patchy and uneven up close. You can see exactly where someone went over it. So even though the tub and shower was structurally fine, it didn’t look clean and uniform the way the owner wanted, and that’s where reglazing comes in. A full refinish gives you one consistent, even surface across the whole thing instead of a patchwork of old surface and touch-up spots.
We started by sanding those touch-up spots off and knocking them down so they wouldn’t telegraph through the new finish. While I was at it, I removed some of the fixtures, since the owner told me he was planning to swap them out for new ones anyway. Pulling those gave me a cleaner surface to work with and meant the coating could go on without having to work around the hardware. When his new fixtures go on later, they’ll sit against a fresh, smooth finish.
Then we did the deep cleaning, like always. Even on a unit in good shape, you’ve got soap scum, body oil, and everyday buildup that has to come off completely before any coating goes down. Fiberglass is slick to begin with, and a coating won’t bond to a dirty, glossy surface. After the cleaning, I went over the whole unit with a light sanding. That step takes the shine off the existing surface and gives the new coating something to grab onto. On tub and shower combination refinishing, that light sanding is small but it matters — skip it and you’re asking for trouble down the road.
With the surface cleaned and sanded, I went straight to the masking. I taped and covered the whole room — floor, walls, fixtures, everything outside the unit. Reglazing throws a fine overspray that drifts and settles on anything it can reach, so the room gets sealed off completely before I spray a thing. Then I set up my ventilation. That part’s important to me — it pulls the fumes and overspray out of the space during the spraying process so they’re not hanging around inside the house. It keeps the air clean while I work and keeps the rest of the home comfortable.
Once the room was sealed and the air was moving, I sprayed the bright white finish across the whole tub and shower. That’s the part that brings it all together. The unit went from a decent-but-patchy surface with visible touch-ups to a smooth, glossy, bright white finish that looked completely uniform from top to bottom. It honestly changed the whole feel of the bathroom — bright, clean, and fresh, like a brand new unit. The owner couldn’t believe the difference, and once his new fixtures go in, it’s going to look like a full remodel.
