A dull fiberglass shower drags down an entire bathroom. Fixing it doesn’t have to mean tearing anything out.

That’s the short of it, and it’s the situation I run into all over Montclair, out at the western edge of the county. The neighborhoods here are full of established homes, and a lot of them have fiberglass showers that have simply lost their shine — dulled finish, soap scum and hard-water buildup settled into the surface, grime ground into the textured floor. Nothing cracked, nothing failing. Just worn and tired in a way that makes the whole room look dated.

Once a fiberglass surface gets to that point, cleaning products stop earning their keep, because the soap scum and minerals have worked into worn fiberglass and the surface itself is spent. That’s when refinishing is the move.

I went at the cleaning hard — stripping the soap film, mineral buildup, and grime, and brushing the textured floor out where the dirt collects in the anti-slip pattern. Then a light sanding to take the dull, worn layer down and give the coating a sound base, which also clears the last of the soap scum the cleaning didn’t lift. The old caulk came out and fresh caulk went in to seal the seams watertight. After masking the bathroom and running ventilation, I primed the fiberglass and sprayed several coats of bright white.

The shower came back bright, smooth, and clean — none of the dull, filmy look it came in with. And it’s easy to keep that way: the fresh surface is smooth and sealed, so soap scum and water spots wipe right off instead of building into film. I tell folks the same simple thing every time — skip the harsh abrasive cleaners and scouring pads, keep up with a gentle wipe-down, and the bright white holds its shine for years.

There’s real value in what you avoid by refinishing, too — no demolition, no tearing into the walls, no bathroom out of service for a week while a new unit gets ordered and installed. I come in, do the work in a day, and leave the rest of the bathroom exactly as it was.

It helps to put the two paths side by side. Replacing a fiberglass shower means demolition, hauling the old unit out, cutting into and repairing the surrounding walls, and a bathroom out of service for days while different trades cycle through. Refinishing is one day, in place, with everything around the shower left exactly as it was. When the unit is structurally sound and the only real problem is a dull, filmy surface, that’s not a close comparison — it’s a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the disruption.

The finish is built to last, too, not a quick cosmetic coat. After a short cure — I’ll give you the exact timing — the shower is back in full use, warrantied, and easy to keep new: the smooth, sealed surface wipes clean, so soap scum and water spots lift right off instead of building into film. Keep the harsh abrasives off it and the bright white holds for years. For a Montclair home, it’s a fast, affordable way to make a tired bathroom feel fresh again without touching anything but the shower itself.

A practical note on timing: the finish dries in roughly seven hours, so the shower is usually back in use the same day rather than out of commission while you wait, and the work is backed by a four-year warranty. If you’d like to see how a refinished shower turns out, ask and I’ll share before-and-after photos from other Montclair-area jobs so you know exactly what you’re getting.

I refinish showers across Montclair and the wider Inland Empire, along with Orange County, San Bernardino, and Riverside. If your fiberglass shower has gone dull and filmy, restoring the surface beats replacing it. My estimates are honest — if it’s not the right call, I’ll say so.

Stephenie Miller from Fontana:

Ilia is amazing at what he does and I whole heartedly recommend him. We have an old cast iron tub that has been reglazed once before, but it suddenly started peeling. I called Ilia, who answered right away, and said that he could come out on a holiday weekend to do the job. He was always prompt and courteous in his communications and his work was top notch!
