We wrapped up an acrylic enclosure reglazing job over in Hemet not long ago, and this one was a little different from most. Usually people call us because something’s falling apart — stained, cracked, peeling, worn down to the point they can’t stand looking at it. This enclosure was actually in pretty good shape. The homeowner just wanted to give it a fresh, modern, bright look, and reglazing was the way to get there without ripping the whole thing out.

He had a clear plan going in, which always makes my job easier. He wanted all the fixtures off the wall before we touched the surface, because once we were done he was putting in all new ones anyway. So that’s where we started. We took off the showerhead, the handles, the trim, all of it, and set everything aside. Pulling the fixtures first gives you a clean, uninterrupted surface to work with, and it means the new coating goes on without any awkward edges or gaps around the hardware. When his new fixtures go back on later, everything sits flush against a fresh finish.

With the fixtures out of the way, we moved into the part that really makes or breaks a job like this — the cleaning. I did a deep clean across the entire surface, and I don’t cut corners on this. On a tub and shower combination refinishing job, there’s more than just the smooth panels to deal with. This enclosure had tile, and tile means grout lines, and grout lines collect grime you can’t always see. So I went around and brushed out every single line, working into the corners and along each tile, making sure there wasn’t any dirt or soap buildup left sitting between them. If you leave that behind, the coating has something to fight against, and you’ll see it later. Clean grout, clean tile, clean panels — that’s the foundation.

Once everything was scrubbed down and dried out, I ran a fresh bead of caulk all the way around the shower. Two reasons for that. One, it gives the whole enclosure a finished, complete look instead of leaving gaps where the panels meet. Two, and more important, it seals the thing up against water. A shower lives and dies on staying watertight, and old, cracked, shrinking caulk is how moisture gets behind your walls and starts causing real problems. New caulk all the way around takes care of that before the coating ever goes on.

Then came the masking. I taped and covered the entire room — floor, walls, anything outside the enclosure that I didn’t want touched. Acrylic enclosure reglazing throws a fine overspray once you start spraying, and that mist drifts. It’ll settle on every surface in the bathroom if you give it the chance. So I seal the room off completely first. It takes time, but it’s the difference between a clean job and one that leaves a mess behind.

With the room masked and the surface prepped, I laid down a bright white coating across the whole enclosure. That’s the moment it all comes together. The acrylic, the tile, the whole combination came out looking like one smooth, glossy, bright white surface — exactly the modern, fresh look the homeowner was after. Once his new fixtures go on, it’s going to look like a brand new shower.

This job was in Hemet, but we handle acrylic enclosure reglazing and tub and shower combination refinishing all over Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange County. Whether your enclosure is beat up or just dated, reglazing gives you a clean, modern finish for a fraction of what a full replacement runs. We give honest estimates and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s the right move for your bathroom.

Stephenie Miller from Fontana:

Ilia is amazing at what he does and I whole heartedly recommend him. We have an old cast iron tub that has been reglazed once before, but it suddenly started peeling. I called Ilia, who answered right away, and said that he could come out on a holiday weekend to do the job. He was always prompt and courteous in his communications and his work was top notch!
