Knocked out a shower refinishing job in Adelanto recently that went about as smooth as they come. It was a fiberglass shower enclosure, and the unit itself was in pretty good shape going in — no cracks, no soft spots, just a finish that had gone dull and tired-looking over the years. Those are some of our favorite jobs, because when the structure’s solid, all we’re really doing is bringing the surface back to new.

This one had a little extra to it on the front end. The customer was planning to put in all new fixtures once we were done, so he asked us to pull the old ones off before we refinished. That’s no problem on our end, and it actually makes for a cleaner result, since we’re not trying to spray around a handle or a plate that’s getting tossed anyway. So we started by taking off the faucet handle, the trim plate behind it, and the overflow plate. With those out of the way, we had a clean, open surface to work with and no hardware in the path of the coating.

From there we moved into prep, which is really where a refinish job is won or lost. We did a deep cleaning of the whole enclosure first to strip out the soap film, body oil, and hard water buildup that collects on a shower surface over the years. None of that’s always visible, but it’ll wreck the bond of a coating if you leave it, so we don’t cut corners there. After the cleaning, we did a light sanding across the surface to give the new coating something to grip. The goal isn’t to grind the fiberglass down, just to knock the gloss off and open it up so everything that goes on after sticks the way it’s supposed to.

Once the surface was clean and scuffed, we masked the entire area off with plastic film and paper. Overspray travels, and the last thing anybody wants is a fine mist of coating settling on the rest of the bathroom, so we seal everything off — walls, floor, anything nearby — before a drop of product comes out. We also set up our ventilation to pull the fumes out of the house during the spraying process, which keeps the air clear and the customer comfortable while we work. That part matters more than people think, especially on an interior bathroom with no window.

With the room sealed and the air moving, we sprayed down an adhesive primer first. That primer is what creates the actual bond between the fiberglass and the topcoat — it’s the layer that makes the whole thing last instead of peeling somewhere down the line. On top of that we laid several coats of a bright white coating, building it up evenly so the finish came out smooth and uniform with no thin spots. When it was done, the enclosure looked like a brand-new unit, ready for the customer to drop his new fixtures right into.

The customer was extremely pleased with how it turned out — pleased enough that he booked his second bathroom with us right there on the spot, before we’d even packed up. That’s about the best feedback we can ask for.

This is the heart of what shower glazing and enclosure refinishing is about. You’re not demolishing a working shower and hauling it to the dump. You’re not waiting on a new unit to get ordered and installed. We come in, handle the prep and the masking, refinish the surface in a day, and you’re back to a shower that looks new for a fraction of what replacement costs. And it’s backed by our warranty, so it’s not a gamble.

We cover a wide stretch of Southern California — all of Orange County, plus San Bernardino and Riverside across the Inland Empire, including towns like Adelanto. Whether it’s a fiberglass enclosure that’s lost its shine, a tub that needs work, or tile that’s seen better days, refinishing is usually an option worth looking at before you spend on a full tear-out.

If you’ve got a shower or tub you’ve been eyeing, give us a call. We give honest estimates — if refinishing is the right move for your unit, we’ll tell you, and if it’s not, we’ll be straight with you about that too.

Ilia is amazing at what he does and I whole heartedly recommend him. We have an old cast iron tub that has been reglazed once before, but it suddenly started peeling. I called Ilia, who answered right away, and said that he could come out on a holiday weekend to do the job. He was always prompt and courteous in his communications and his work was top notch!
