Up in Crestline, near Lake Gregory, a good share of the homes are cabins and weekend places — used hard on the weekends, sitting in a damp mountain climate the rest of the time. The fixture I refinish most up there is the one-piece fiberglass tub and shower combo, because that damp environment and the seasonal use are rough on it. The finish goes dull, mildew works into the caulk, and grime settles into the textured floor until the whole unit looks dingy.

The combo I worked on recently was a rental cabin, and the owner wanted it looking sharp for guests without shutting the place down for a remodel. That’s the thing about these one-piece units — replacing one is a real ordeal anywhere, and up a winding mountain road it’s worse. You’re hauling a bulky new unit up the hill, tearing out the old one, patching the walls around it, and half the time the replacement doesn’t even line up with the existing framing. Reglazing skips every bit of that. I refinish the unit right where it sits.

The textured floor is where the time goes on a combo. That anti-slip pattern grips your feet, but it also traps dirt and soap film down in the low spots where a sponge never reaches, so I scrubbed it out thoroughly before anything else. From there it was a deep clean of the full enclosure, then a light sanding over the whole surface to knock the gloss down and give the coating a base to grab. The mildewed caulk came out and got replaced with fresh caulk so the seams were sealed tight — which matters in a place where moisture is always in the air. After masking the bathroom and setting up ventilation, I primed the fiberglass and sprayed several coats of bright white.

The dull, mildewed unit came back bright and clean, looking like a fresh install, and nobody had to drag a new combo up the mountain to get there. For a cabin or a rental you want presentable without the chaos of a tear-out, that’s hard to beat.

Timing matters on a rental, so I’ll mention how the day shaped up. The bulk of a combo job is prep — scrubbing the floor out, cleaning, sanding, masking — and once the finish goes on it needs time to cure before anyone uses it. I laid it all out for the owner so they could block the calendar around it: one day on site, a short cure window after, and then the unit was ready for the next set of guests. No weeks-long gap, no contractors trooping up the mountain in shifts.

It’s also worth saying what this isn’t. People sometimes try to freshen a cabin combo themselves with a roll-on refinishing kit from the hardware store, and on a damp mountain surface those tend to peel within a season because they never really bond. What I put down is a proper prepped-and-primed coating built to hold, and sealed at the seams so the moisture up here stays out of the walls. Cleaned gently and kept up between rentals, it stays bright and tight far longer than any over-the-counter fix.

I cover the mountain communities along with the rest of the region — Orange County, plus San Bernardino and Riverside across the Inland Empire. Whether it’s a tired tub and shower combo in Crestline or a worn tub or shower anywhere nearby, refinishing usually beats replacing. And my estimates are honest ones — if reglazing isn’t right for your unit, I won’t try to talk you into it.

Stephenie Miller from Fontana:

Ilia is amazing at what he does and I whole heartedly recommend him. We have an old cast iron tub that has been reglazed once before, but it suddenly started peeling. I called Ilia, who answered right away, and said that he could come out on a holiday weekend to do the job. He was always prompt and courteous in his communications and his work was top notch!
