We just completed a porcelain tub reglazing job in Riverside on a tub that had been painted a couple of years back, and like a lot of these, the previous finish was peeling. The cause was the usual one — a bath mat with suction cups. Those cups grip the coating, and every time the mat gets peeled up off the surface they pull on the finish until it starts lifting. Once it lets go in one spot, it spreads. So before we did anything else, we explained to the customer exactly why her tub had peeled and how to keep it from happening again: use a bath mat designed specifically for glazed surfaces, never one with suction cups. That one piece of knowledge is the difference between a finish that lasts and one that’s peeling again in two years.

Now, the part of this job worth talking about is how we handled the old coating, because it’s not the same on every tub. When a previous finish is failing, you’ve got a judgment call to make about how much of it to remove. In some cases the old coating is so poorly bonded that you have to scrape or sand the entire surface down and start from bare porcelain. In other cases the old finish is actually gripping well over most of the tub, and only certain areas have let go — and there, full removal would be overkill. It comes down to the quality of that old coating and how well it bonded to the surface underneath. You test it, you read it, and you take off what needs to come off without tearing up what’s still solid.

On this particular tub, the old coating was holding fine across most of the surface. Only the spots around the suction-cup damage were peeling. So we did a partial sanding — taking down just the peeling areas, feathering the edges so they’d blend, and leaving the well-bonded coating in place as a sound base. That’s the right call when the existing finish earns it. Stripping a whole tub that didn’t need it just adds hours and cost without making the final result any better.

Before the sanding, we removed the silicone from around the tub and along the shower rail, since old silicone has to come off for a clean finish and can’t be coated over. After the partial sanding was done, we moved into a deep cleaning, scrubbing the whole surface down so there was nothing left to interfere with the new coating’s bond. There were a couple of chips on the side and along the edge, so we fixed those too, filling them and bringing them back flush so they’d disappear under the finish.

With the prep complete, we masked the whole room — walls, floor, fixtures, everything outside the tub — to keep any overspray contained. Then we set up our ventilation to pull the fumes out of the house during the spraying process so they weren’t drifting through the home. Once everything was sealed and the air was moving, we sprayed our bright white finish across the tub. After it set, we pulled the masking and presented the finished job to the customer. She was extremely satisfied — the peeling was gone, the chips were gone, and the tub came out smooth, glossy, and bright white like new.

This job was in Riverside, but we handle porcelain tub reglazing and cast iron tub refinishing all over Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange County. Peeling finishes, chips, old silicone, the wrong bath mat doing damage — whatever you’re dealing with, we read each tub on its own and do exactly what it needs, no more and no less. We give honest estimates and we’ll always tell you straight what caused the problem and how to keep it from coming back.

Ilia is amazing at what he does and I whole heartedly recommend him. We have an old cast iron tub that has been reglazed once before, but it suddenly started peeling. I called Ilia, who answered right away, and said that he could come out on a holiday weekend to do the job. He was always prompt and courteous in his communications and his work was top notch!
