Tearing out a one-piece combo unit is a pain anywhere. Doing it up a mountain road in Running Springs is a whole different level of pain — and it’s the main reason refinishing wins up there.

Think about what a replacement actually involves at elevation. You’re hauling a bulky new unit up winding roads, every contractor and delivery has to make that same drive, the demolition tears into the surrounding walls, and after all of it the new unit doesn’t always fit the existing framing. Reglazing skips the entire ordeal. I refinish the unit right where it sits, in a single visit, and leave the rest of the bathroom alone. For a cabin or a mountain home you want looking sharp without turning it into a construction zone, that’s about as clean as a solution gets.

The combo I refinished up there was structurally fine but tired — the finish dulled across the tub and surround, grime worked into the textured floor, and the caulk ready for replacing. Mountain bathrooms also deal with constant moisture, which is hard on a combo over time, so sealing it back up properly matters.

I scrubbed the textured floor out first, clearing the dirt and soap film from the anti-slip pattern, then deep-cleaned the full enclosure and gave everything a light sanding to take the gloss off and give the coating a base to grip. The old caulk came out, and fresh caulk went in to seal the seams tight against water sneaking behind them — important in a damp mountain environment. After masking the bathroom and setting up ventilation, I primed the fiberglass and sprayed several coats of bright white.

A dull, dated unit came back bright, smooth, and clean, reading like a fresh install — and nobody had to wrestle a new combo up the mountain to make it happen.

The logistics are really the heart of it up here. Every part of a replacement is harder at elevation — the new unit has to be hauled up winding roads, each trade has to make that same drive, and the demolition and refit stretch across days with the bathroom unusable throughout. Refinishing collapses all of that into one visit, on site, with the rest of the room untouched. For a mountain home or a cabin, avoiding that whole production is often reason enough on its own.

The damp climate makes the sealing matter, so the fresh caulk at the seams is doing real work, keeping moisture out of the walls rather than just tidying the look. After a short cure — I’ll tell you exactly how long — the combo is back in use and warrantied. Gentle cleaning keeps the textured floor and walls looking new, and skipping abrasive scouring protects the finish. For a Running Springs home, restoring the sound combo you already have is far less money, far less hassle, and far less moisture risk than wrestling a new one up the mountain.

Scheduling up the mountain is easy to sort out — tell me what works and I’ll plan the visit around it. The finish dries in about seven hours, so the unit is usually back in use the same day, and the work is backed by a four-year warranty. If you’d like a straight read on whether your combo is worth refinishing, send me a few photos and I’ll give you a no-obligation estimate.

I bring tub and shower combo reglazing up to Running Springs and the other mountain communities, and I cover Orange County, San Bernardino, and Riverside as well. If your combo is dingy and the caulk’s gone, refinishing it in place beats the headache and cost of a replacement up here. My estimates are honest — if reglazing isn’t right for your unit, I’ll tell you straight.

Stephenie Miller from Fontana:

Ilia is amazing at what he does and I whole heartedly recommend him. We have an old cast iron tub that has been reglazed once before, but it suddenly started peeling. I called Ilia, who answered right away, and said that he could come out on a holiday weekend to do the job. He was always prompt and courteous in his communications and his work was top notch!
