Most reglazing jobs involve a surface that’s either original or has been coated once before. This one in Wildomar was different. When we arrived to look at the porcelain tub, it became clear it had already been reglazed twice over its life. That changes how you approach the work, and it’s where experience really earns its keep.

Here’s the tricky part. When a tub has two old coatings on it, you can’t just sand everything down to bare porcelain and start over, and you also can’t ignore what’s underneath and spray right on top. The right move lives somewhere in between, and finding it is a judgment call. If the existing coating is still bonded well and holding tight, there’s no reason to grind all the way back to the original surface. What you want is to knock down and smooth the edges, take off any spots that are peeling or lifting, and leave the stable material in place as a base. Sand too little and you trap a failing layer under your new finish. Sand too much and you create more work and more risk than the job calls for. We call it finding the golden spot, and it comes down to reading the surface as you go.

To do that, we worked through different grades of sandpaper, starting coarse at around 80 grit to cut down the high spots and rough edges, then stepping up through finer grits toward 220 to bring everything to a smooth, even transition. The goal was a surface with no peeling and no hard ridges between old and new, just a continuous base ready to be coated.

With the sanding dialed in, we removed the old caulk from around the tub. Then we moved into a deep cleaning to clear away the dust from sanding along with any soap film or residue, since a coating only bonds as well as the surface is clean. Once everything was clean, we ran fresh caulk all the way around the tub to give it a smooth, finished edge.

From there we prepped the room, masking off the whole bathroom to keep overspray contained and setting up ventilation to keep the air moving while we worked.

Then came the coating system, and on a tub like this one, that system matters. We started with an adhesive primer, the layer that creates the bond between the existing surface and the new finish. Over that we applied a coat of epoxy primer, which does something especially useful on a tub that’s been coated twice before: it helps hide minor imperfections in the surface underneath, evening everything out before the color goes on. Finally, we applied several coats of our bright white finish, built up gradually for a smooth, even result.

The real test on a project like this is whether you can make a twice-reglazed tub look like a single, flawless surface, and that’s exactly what we got. Despite everything that tub had been through and the two coatings already on it, the finished result came out as smooth as we could have hoped for. You’d never know it had been refinished before, let alone twice.

The customer was thrilled, and that meant a lot on a job that took this much care to get right. A tub that’s already been reglazed a couple of times is the kind of project where shortcuts show up fast, so seeing it come out clean and smooth was a real payoff for the patience it took.

This is the level of attention we bring to porcelain tub refinishing, whether a tub is original or has been coated before. We handle tub reglazing across Wildomar and throughout the Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange County areas.

Ilia is amazing at what he does and I whole heartedly recommend him. We have an old cast iron tub that has been reglazed once before, but it suddenly started peeling. I called Ilia, who answered right away, and said that he could come out on a holiday weekend to do the job. He was always prompt and courteous in his communications and his work was top notch!
