We took on a project in Yorba Linda for a homeowner with a porcelain top that had been painted years ago. By the time they called us, the old finish was already peeling, mostly around the drain and in the corners. That kind of peeling usually tells a story, and on this job it pointed to a problem underneath the surface that a simple recoat would never have solved.
When we inspected the top, we found the real issue. The drain had been installed incorrectly, which left a gap between the top and the drain ring. Water was collecting in that gap and sitting there all the time, with nowhere to go. No coating, no matter how well it goes on, is going to hold up over standing water and a bad seal. If we had just sanded and sprayed, the new finish would have started failing in the same spot within months.
So we talked it over with the owner and recommended fixing the gap properly before doing anything else. We filled that space with a fiberglass body filler to seal it completely. That gave us a solid, watertight base around the drain and took care of the root cause instead of just covering it up.
With the repair handled, we moved into the prep, which is where most of the real work in any reglazing job lives. We sanded down the previous coating to get back to a clean surface, since spraying over a peeling layer only locks in the failure. Then we did a deep cleaning of the whole top to clear away dust, residue, and anything else that would keep the new coating from bonding the way it should.
From there we ran new caulk all the way around the top to seal the edges and keep water where it belongs. The porcelain had also picked up a couple of chips along the way, so we repaired those and smoothed them out, which is what gives you an even finish at the end rather than old flaws telegraphing through the fresh white.
Before any spraying started, we masked off the whole room to minimize overspray and set up proper ventilation with an exhaust blower. An industrial coating goes on as a fine spray, and good airflow keeps the workspace safe and the finish clean. This part takes time, but skipping it is how you end up with overspray on every surface in the room.
Finally, we applied our bright white coating, sprayed on in smooth, even layers. The top that came in peeling and pooling water went out looking brand new, with a sealed drain that will actually last.
The payoff for the homeowner was the same one we see again and again. Replacing a porcelain top means demolition, new materials, labor, and days of downtime, and it adds up fast. By reglazing instead, this customer kept what they had, fixed the underlying problem, and saved thousands of dollars in the process.
This is the same care we bring to every bathtub reglazing and porcelain top refinishing job we take on. The right diagnosis, the right repair, and the right coating add up to a result that holds up instead of failing again in a year. If you’ve got a tub, shower, or top that’s worn out, or a previous paint or reglaze job that’s starting to go, reglazing is almost always smarter than tearing everything out. We serve Yorba Linda and all of Orange County, along with Riverside and San Bernardino counties, and estimates are always free. Give us a call and we’ll come take a look.
