Here’s a recent tub and tile reglazing project we completed in Palm Desert, and this one involved more prep work than most people would ever guess from looking at the finished result. The owner was replacing his shower doors, so before anything else, he asked us to remove the old doors and frame. That’s a common request, and it makes sense — if you’re refinishing the surface anyway, that’s the moment to pull the old door assembly so the new finish goes on clean and the new doors mount against a fresh surface.

But here’s what you find when an old shower door frame comes off: a mess. Once we got the doors and frame out, the surface underneath was covered in old caulking and glue — years of sealant and adhesive that had been hiding behind that frame the whole time. None of that can stay. A coating won’t bond over caulk and glue residue, and even if it did, you’d see every lump and ridge telegraphing through the finish. So our first real job was stripping all of it off the surface and getting back down to clean, bare material.

From there, we moved to the joint where the tub and tile meet and removed all the old caulking along that line. That seam is one of the most important spots in the whole enclosure — it’s where water wants to sneak in — and old, failing caulk there is a problem waiting to happen. It all came out.

Then came the deep cleaning, and on a tile job, that means more than wiping things down. We did a light sanding across the surface to knock down the old finish and give the new coating something to grip, and we brushed out each grout line individually. Grout lines collect grime that ordinary cleaning never touches, and if you leave it in there, the coating has something working against it from day one. Every line got brushed clean.

Once everything was scrubbed out, we dried the whole surface completely and took a hard look at the grout itself. Some lines had grout missing or worn away, so we did a full regrouting to make sure there wasn’t a single line with missing grout anywhere in the enclosure. This is a step that separates real tile refinishing from a quick spray-over. Grout is part of the structure — if it’s missing, water gets behind the tile, and no coating on earth fixes that. We build the grout back solid first, then refinish over a surface that’s actually sound.

With the prep complete, we masked the entire room — ceiling, walls, floor, and fixtures, every surface that wasn’t getting sprayed. Reglazing throws a fine overspray that drifts onto anything left uncovered, so the room gets sealed up completely before we spray. Then we set up our ventilation to pull the fumes out of the house during the spraying process. The homeowner shouldn’t have to live with fumes drifting through the place, and with the exhaust running, they don’t.

Then we sprayed the bright white coating across the whole tub and tile surround. After all that prep — the glue removal, the caulk, the sanding, the brushing, the regrouting — the spraying is where it all pays off. The transformation was phenomenal. The enclosure went from a worn surface buried under old adhesive and tired grout to a smooth, glossy, bright white finish from top to bottom. With his new doors going on against that fresh surface, it’s going to look like a brand new shower. The customer was extremely satisfied with the results.

This job was in Palm Desert, but we handle tub and tile reglazing and tile refinishing all over Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange County. Old caulk, missing grout, dated tile, surfaces left rough after a door swap — we’ve seen it all, and we prep it right before a drop of coating goes down. We give honest estimates and we’ll tell you straight what your enclosure needs.

Ilia is amazing at what he does and I whole heartedly recommend him. We have an old cast iron tub that has been reglazed once before, but it suddenly started peeling. I called Ilia, who answered right away, and said that he could come out on a holiday weekend to do the job. He was always prompt and courteous in his communications and his work was top notch!
