A cast iron tub is worth saving. These tubs were built to last for generations, and a lot of them have already outlived two or three remodels around them. The catch is that replacing one is a major undertaking, since cast iron is enormously heavy and awkward to haul out, so when the surface starts looking rough, refinishing is almost always the smarter path. This recent project in Claremont was a good reminder of why.

The tub had been painted at some point in the past. Paint and a proper reglazing coating are not the same thing, and a painted tub tends to give that away over time. On this one, the paint had started peeling and flaking, mostly down on the bottom where water collects and sits. That’s the first place a painted finish fails, and it’s a clear sign the coating was never built to stand up to a working bathtub.

We started by scraping off the peeling and flaking spots, taking the loose material down as far as it would go. Most of that work was concentrated on the bottom, where the failure was worst. From there we sanded the edges of those scraped areas to smooth the transition, so there wouldn’t be any hard lines or lifted spots left to show through the new finish.

Next we dealt with the silicone. We removed the old silicone all the way around the top of the tub, then went along the line between the tile and the tub with a brush to clear out every last bit of remaining silicone hiding in that joint. Old silicone is one of the things a new coating simply won’t bond to, so getting it completely gone is not optional.

Then came a thorough deep cleaning, with extra attention to the spots that needed it most: the edges, the bottom, and especially the area around the drain. The drain had collected a lot of grime and mineral buildup over the years, the kind of hard deposits a quick wipe never touches. We worked all of it off, because any buildup left behind becomes a weak point under the new coating.

With the surface clean, we ran fresh caulk all the way around the top of the tub to seal it properly. We also repaired a couple of chips, one on the surface and one on the side, filling and smoothing them so the finished tub would read as one clean piece.

Before any spraying, we masked off the entire room with paper and plastic to keep overspray to an absolute minimum. Then we set up ventilation, which on a job like this does double duty. It keeps the air clear for a clean finish, and it pulls the fumes out of the house during the spraying process so they aren’t lingering indoors.

Finally, we sprayed the tub with our bright white finish. Over a surface that had been scraped, sanded, stripped of old silicone, deep cleaned, and sealed, the new coating laid down smooth and even. That tired, peeling, painted-over cast iron tub came back looking clean, bright, and as good as new.

That’s the case for refinishing a cast iron tub instead of replacing it. You keep a heavy, high-quality fixture that’s already proven it can last, you skip the labor and expense of tearing it out, and you end up with a surface that looks new. If you’ve got a painted or worn cast iron tub of your own, bathtub refinishing is almost always worth a look before you consider replacement. We provide tub reglazing and honest estimates throughout Claremont and across the Orange County, Riverside, and San Bernardino areas.

Ilia is amazing at what he does and I whole heartedly recommend him. We have an old cast iron tub that has been reglazed once before, but it suddenly started peeling. I called Ilia, who answered right away, and said that he could come out on a holiday weekend to do the job. He was always prompt and courteous in his communications and his work was top notch!
