Just finished an acrylic shower enclosure reglaze over in Bloomington, and this is the kind of job that shows you don’t need major damage to get a major payoff. The unit was actually in decent shape going in — no cracks, no structural problems. Just a couple of small chips, about nickel-sized, and several deep scratches running along the wall of the enclosure. Cosmetic stuff. But cosmetic stuff is exactly what you notice every single day when you’re standing in the shower, and clearing it up changes how the whole bathroom feels.
Here’s how the job went.
We started with a deep cleaning of the entire enclosure, and we paid special attention to the textured bottom. Acrylic and fiberglass units almost always have that molded anti-slip texture on the floor, and while it keeps you from slipping, it also traps grime down in the low spots where ordinary cleaning just skates right over it. So we brushed that texture out thoroughly to pull all the built-up dirt out from inside the pattern. If you skip that and spray over it, all that trapped grime is still sitting under your new finish — so it has to come clean first.
After the deep cleaning, we lightly sanded the whole surface. Two reasons for that: it scuffs the glossy surface so the coating has something to grip, and it clears off any remaining soap scum the cleaning didn’t fully lift. A coating bonds to a properly prepped surface, not a slick or filmy one, so this step isn’t one to rush.
Next we dealt with the actual damage. We filled the chips and the deep scratches with a fiberglass body filler, troweling it in and then smoothing it down to bring those spots flush and flat with the rest of the wall. That’s the step that makes chips and scratches disappear instead of just getting buried — fill them, flatten them, and once the finish goes on you’d never know they were there.
With the repairs done, we ran fresh caulk all the way around the unit. Old caulk is usually cracked or pulling loose, and recaulking now means the seams are sealed up tight and water stays where it’s supposed to.
Then came the masking. We sealed off the whole bathroom with plastic film and paper to keep overspray from drifting onto anything it shouldn’t touch. Overspray travels further than people expect, so the room gets fully covered before any product comes out. And as always, we set up our ventilation system to pull the fumes out of the house and keep the air clear during the spraying process.
Now the coating, and this is where the layering matters. We started with an adhesion primer — that’s the layer that actually bonds the new finish to the acrylic so it holds instead of peeling. On top of that we applied an epoxy primer, which fills and hides the fine surface imperfections, giving you a smooth, uniform base to finish over. And then, on top of all of it, we sprayed the bright white finish, built up in even coats.
The result completely changed the look of the bathroom. The chips were gone, the scratches were gone, and the whole enclosure went from worn and marked-up to bright, smooth, glossy white. A unit that was dragging the room down was suddenly the cleanest-looking thing in it.
